Forum: GratefulDead Subject: It be Monday Morning again, so . . . .

Time to wonder.

I have this sneaking suspicion that most people are cranky underneath their proper veneers and most people are vulnerable underneath their thick skins.

I've been posting for--does it matter how long?--long enough to have a fair sense of the likes and dislikes of many of the players. I know who my fellow pre-retirement afficionados are--even the pre-keithers. I know the Brentites, the Bruceologists, the 77ers, the these and the those and the thus--reasonably well.

I also know where certain folks hot points lie and what buttons to push if I wanted to be a total prick and get a rise out of them.

I know who likes to be argumentative, who likes to poke at exposed nerves, and who the saints are.

I also know where my own guilt and innocence are.

Seems to me that most of you regulars should have this pretty much down pat by now as well.

With said knowledge in hand, we post about this and that and every so often a spear will be hurled and a fracas will break out.

Okay: familiar ground--so what is my point?

I wonder: we seem so reluctant to reveal real first names as if somehow that will lead others to--what? try to locate our families and kill them?

I think just the opposite. I find it to be all too anonymous to respond to Somedarkhollow or Direwolf or Robthewordsmith or Arbuthnot, etc. I'm just replying to a nom de plume, a mask worn over a mask, a one dimensional identity that doesn't seem real enough to offend or to be offended. I may know about Rob's penchant for haggis, but he is still too much a name and not enough an embodied person. And, going back to what I already wrote, that is a wrong belief.

The point:

I realize that this may well incite more ridicule than approval, but I feel that if we went to first names, there might be a little more humanity here-a taste more flesh and bone. I noticed in a thread yesterday that someone posted his real name and the thread suddenly became more---gasp--human! It was nice. Worth a shot.

(I also notice that many of you have shared email or personal addresses--or have even met--those friendships have real blood running through them).

And, no, I've never been in or been the basis for any movies:

My name is Bill. Good morning to you all.

It's been fun watching these screen names melt into normal names--kind of like asking your friends what their middle names are.

Our names, which are certainly not unique as are our screen names, seem to me to place us on a more level, humanized playing field.

I am thoroughly enjoying meeting you one and all as if for the first time!

Humanized huh? Well, I might not acuse some of us as being human. I think 2 might be this forums version of the HAL9000. "Dave---what are you doing Dave?" Insert Bill, Todd, Doug, Rob, Keith, or any other name as appropriate.

OK, Dire, as one of the unofficial ambassadors of controversy here, how about you take the lead and see if you can't divert attention from Bill's all too well-intentioned idea? Or, if you feel like taking a pass, perhaps I might be so inclined as to see if I can't wrest control of this thread and drive it into the swamp. I've done it before.

I think you've really struck a chord with this one, Bill.

We Wear the Mask
by Paul Laurence Dunbar

We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes -
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Spirit, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!

What about Jerry Band? -- into it at all. ...I know I'm asking too many questions but after thirty years I can't believe how much I didn't know about until I found all you kind folks (after college, '82, didn't know anybody into the band - in fact, just the opposite -- so I quit and drove a cab, but still no trading, etc.) Thanks, ghostofpig; great post -- Paul (but really known as "Fritz" after a dog than ran away)

Fritz:

yeah--that show was the real deal.

The setlist:

12-06-73 Cleveland Convention Center, Cleveland, Oh. (Thu)
1: Bertha, Mexicali, Loser, B. T. Wind, TLEO, BIODTL, Deal, El Paso, Row Jimmy, Greatest, China Cat> I Know You Rider, Around
2: Ramble On, Me & My Uncle, H. C. Sunshine, Big River, Dark Star> Eyes> Stella Blue> Sugar Magnolia

I believe the location is either incorrect or at least used to be called Public Hall. We had good seats on the lip of the balcony. My "live" recollections are of my date (her first and perhaps only dead show) saying that Bobby's intro to China Cat was "cute" and the constant presence of a bottle of Heineken on Phil's amp (Phil drinking beer?). Everything was played very well. TLEO was a new one for me.

The Dark Star is highly ruminative--lots of rolling around trying to find the sweet spot--but worth the half hour. Then
Eyes--very jaunty version--into a sweet Stella Blue, etc.

In 1973, I graduated college and was entering the next phase of my life. Having had my ears opened up by the Dead, I had moved into the "jazz" idiom. I was deep into the Blue Note stable, Coltrane, Miles (through Bitches Brew), McCoy Tyner, and I was just launching into the more esoteric "free" sounds of Ornette, Alber Ayler, and the next generation--the Art Ensemble of Chicago (my favorite group of all time, BAR NONE). I stopped paying attention to the Dead after they got too big for me--I don't like concerts in hockey rinks.

I did see them again 1980 in Atlanta, but, by then, the whole thing had shifted so far that I felt disconnected.
Even though the show was at the Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta!

So hello to you Bill! :)
what an absolute huge smile there is on my face right now, after reading this thread. :)

After all the activities this past weekend, I was indeed sitting on the fence about coming onto forum and once again reminding everybody what it is that I have learned so long ago.... there are indeed real people behind these cute little screen names. People who have likes and dislikes... and believe it or not... real feelings. You would be amazed at how much someone could care about somebody else that they've met 'online'.

Thank you for reminding us all that we are more than just a screen name. Hopefully, as we start this week out brand new, it will be something that we won't forget.

Everybody pretty much knows that my name is Gina. Nice to meet you all. :)

Hi Gina:

One of the few to toss away the mask long ago! (Of course, some like Cliff and Bryan and Rob skipped the whole mask thing!)

There is a twisted irony to all this. Just got back from the local Publix. Everywhere I went, I saw name tags that read "Joe" or "Bob" or "Jane" or whomever, and I thought--could these secretly be forumites? Have I stumbled upon some scary truth? Are all, gasp, real people with real lives and real concerns? Even more: are we all secretly Clark Kents?

You bet, and ain't it grand?

Maybe there will be less yelling.

of course, now we all need to post photos :) (Again, Gina, you and a few others have taken the lead here!)

Wasn't it Bob Dylan whote wrote in 1964 that "Even the President of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked"?

We is who we is--and I like that.

Excellent post, GOP Don! What a concept to put a real name to a pen.

My name's Greg and I really share none of the personality traits associated with our friend Jack Straw so have no fear. No, I'm not from Wichita and no, I will not cut my buddy down.

Cheers,
Grog

Funny---I was just wondering the same thing. Some use their own names, as MattA did. I always speculated Rob was actually Robert Smith of The Cure just slumming here @ this forum w/another personality, kinda like 2. No Rob, I'm NOT comparing you to 2. SomeDarkHollow is probably a Samuel Donald Harris, or a Stephen David Hawking. Dancinbears is really Debbie Boone in disquise. Direwolf is Paul Wolfowitz waiting for an opening to ask for a job & a new girlfriend.

Sorry guys, just poking some fun.

Me---well James is the first name listed on official documents, but I go by Keith, which is the 2nd name listed on the same official documents. Mom & dad didn't want to "Jims" in the house. "Tree-ap" is the southern bastardization of "trip"---a name given after a "minor" high school LSD bust, and then used exlusively by a waitress from Boone, NC, and a Hollywood wannabe.

Ah the south. Here in Atlanta, where native southerners are threatened with extinction, you can tell by certain names. If you say Marietta as Mah--ree--etta, you ain't the real thing. But if you say May-retta, you can have all the grits you want.

Or in Charleston, S.C.--ay-ut o'clock.

Another funny story about the South---My aunt married a man from southern PA then moved Brentwood outside of Nashville, Tennessee. He ended up taking a speech class so he could learn how to "talk southern" (he's the ceo of a packaging supply co & needed to impress the yocals) & she sounds like she's from there.

White beans are watt be-uns.

Nice. My username used to be my real name - Matt A. I changed it as everyone else seemed to have put some thought into their nom de plum.

Don't get me wrong--I love these screen names--yours very much included!

There is some personality in the chosen names--I should have mentioned that--from Mr. (Growlin')Wolf* to Dancinbears.

*disclaimer: that is a compliment, Mr. W. :)

Hello Bill. My name, as advertised, is Rob - short for Robert - and I'm very pleased indeed to make your acquaintance.

I had long been wondering what your first name was, Rob. I am amazed that Somedarkhollow knew it all along!

Top of the morning to you (or is it afternoon in haggistown?)

Frankly, as I look to the sky, I pray for gloom and doom--we are in a desperate 200 year drought and need the wind and rain. Other than that, it's a wonderful day--full of possibilities--that will hopefully lead to something useful.

Not that chatting with you isn't "useful"--well, okay, it isn't--but it is something.

Just what---I'll get back to you later on that. Snicker.

"My name is Thor." Remember that kraft commercial? Now that was memorable.

My name is Jeremy -- unless you wanted to call me by one of my many nicknames.

I remember the good old teaching days--trying to remember 80 or so names each semester/quarter. Usually I got them all by the end (here comes a rude comment, I'm sure).
